I Love Li Yu's Verses
I was recently initiated to a song taken from a Cantonese opera. It is called 'The End to a Romance' and depicts how Li Yu's first wife, Da Zhou Hou, died in his arms. Li Yu was romantically involved with
Da Zhou Hou and her younger sister at the same time. Never mind how inefficient he was as a ruler and how unfaithful he could be as a husband, but his sparkle as a verse writer lets him shine through centuries.
In the song 'The End to a Romance', one of his famous works, 'Spring in Jade Mansion' was presented in its entirety. Till now do I realize how much I have neglected his brilliant verses for all these years. I have
ventured to translate this verse, which I so admire and would like to share it with his literary fans.
'Spring in Jade Mansion'
Done with the dressing up for the spring banquet at night,
The palace maids blessed with snow-sparkling complexion, offer an awesome sight.
They make their appearance in neat and orderly lines.
Exhaustive are the bamboo flutes and reed pipes when they blow and combine.
Sounds reverberate between the sea and the sky.
The tune of silk and feather robes with aplomb is revived.
It is played over and over in a tireless vibe
Till the melody enwraps the universe in all its delight.
Who cares to exude fragrance when spring is already so sweet-smelling?
Drunk and slouching on the pillars, your emotion is full to the brim.
Don't you light up the candle in red on my path of return.
It's enough just to look at the clear moonlight as relected on the hooves
of my horse.
